Cookie Notice
Which cookies this site sets, what each one does, and how to change your mind. Last updated 17 August 2026.
The short version
This site sets two cookies, both from Google Analytics, and only if you accept them. Nothing is stored on your device for analytics until you switch analytics on, either by choosing "Accept All Cookies" or by turning it on in our Privacy Preference Center. If you decline, or simply ignore the banner, the Google Analytics library is never loaded and no analytics cookie is written.
We do not use cookies for advertising, retargeting, or cross-context behavioural tracking, and we do not sell or share the data with advertising networks.
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. It lets the site recognise the same browser on a later page or a later visit. Some cookies are needed for a site to work at all; others, like the analytics cookies described below, are optional and need your permission under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations.
Cookies we set
Analytics cookies - optional, set only with your consent
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site, so we can see which articles get read and where people give up. The data is aggregated and used for statistical purposes; we do not use it to identify you.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one browser from another, so repeat visits are not counted as new people | 13 months |
_ga_GFFR3105XQ | Google Analytics | Holds session state for this specific analytics property | 13 months |
Both are first-party cookies, set on the lift-off.co.uk domain. Google acts as our processor for this analytics data. You can read Google's privacy policy for how they handle it.
Things that are not cookies
Two features store a small value in your browser's local storage rather than in a cookie. Neither is used for tracking, neither is sent to us, and both are needed for the feature you asked for to work.
- Your theme choice. If you switch between the dark and light versions of the site, we remember which you picked so the page does not flip back on you.
- Gated downloads. When you unlock a download by giving us your email address, a flag is stored so you are not asked again on that device.
- Your cookie choice. Your answer to the banner is stored so we do not ask on every page.
Changing or withdrawing your choice
You can change your mind at any time, and it is as easy to withdraw consent as it was to give it. Select here or in the footer of any page to open our Privacy Preference Center, where you can switch analytics on or off and save the change.
When you save with analytics switched off, we stop any further analytics cookies being set and we delete the two already stored on your device, so there is nothing left for you to clear. If you would rather handle it yourself, every major browser also lets you block or delete cookies for a single site or globally, though doing so may affect how other sites work.
